How to get to Cabo San Lucas

In the not too distant past, private plane or yacht, or a bone-jarring endurance drive the length of the Baja Peninsula were the only ways to get to Cabo. For years Cabo San Lucas, San Jose Del Cabo, and further to the East - Los Barriles, La Ventanas and La Paz were secret destinations of the rich and famous, the Hollywood crowd and government politicos.  Now the options are many and varied.  All visitors today must carry a current passport, whether travelling by air, land or sea.

Flight times from Cabo San LucasFly to Cabo San Lucas

Flying is now the most common way visitors get to enjoy the magnificent beaches of Cabo.  Many of the major American airlines fly to Cabo, including American, Delta, Continental, United, Alaska Air, and US Airways.  If your city offers a direct flight, try and book that even if it costs a little more.   Getting there and getting started on your vacation as soon as possible is the goal.   From the airport, you can jump on a shared shuttle for $15 a head, or if your group is larger and you want to get there quicker, you can get your own taxi-van to the house for $80 (the return to the airport taxi trip is $55).  We can also arrange to have a car or shuttle bus pick you up.  Let us know what you prefer and we will take care of it.

Highway 1Drive to Cabo San Lucas

No, we're not talking the Baja 1000 here!  Now visitors can cruise the paved two lane highway which runs from the border between San Diego and Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas. If your family wagon isn’t quite up to Baja race specifications then a leisurely two or three day drive on the Transpeninsular Highway may be just the ticket for your next vacation.  The government has made considerable investment in the main road over the last few years, creating a nice and safe route for tourists and commerce.  Quality hotels and gas stations are to be found along the way along with the famous government “Green Angels” trucks which patrol the entire distance. These trucks offer free emergency assistance to stranded motorists including engine belts, water for the radiator, hoses, gas and other minor repair services.
Be sure to keep your tank full as much as possible.  The Government-run Pemex stations are generally clean, but aren't always open or may be out of gas.  There are a number of toll booths along the toll road (you can use the old highway to bypass them), but are only about $3.00 each.  There are army checkpoints to pass too.  It is mandatory to stop at these.  However, their Baja ferry routesinterest is in illegal weapons and drugs and there is no cause for alarm.
The last thing to note is that driving anywhere in Mexico requires you to purchase Mexican auto insurance; your policy will not cover you in Mexico.  Check with your auto insurance company or your car rental agency.

Boat to Cabo San Lucas

Cabo is well known for being a gracious host to many of the world's big cruise ships, both out of America and other parts of Mexico.  Plus there are charter companies out of San Diego that will take you there too.  If you are on the mainland there are 2 ferry services running between Baja and the mainland.  You can see the Guaymas-Santa Rosalia service here, or check out the more southern route terminating at La Paz here.
