Well, thanks to the snail's-pace immigration paper processing system, we are back in town to complete another step. In just two months several more restaurants have opened up right in our neighborhood. The highlight of the trip though was a half day of fishing with Mucho Loco. Our captain of Jose and deck hand Luis did a great job of getting us on the fish early and often. We landed six bonita tuna in just an hour, then switched to live bait for dorado, landing four of those, and managed a yellow fin tuna to boot. We were happy to share our catch with the crew, our maid, and some local friends. Sashimi, sushi, ceviche, and grilled fish. Hard to beat.
It's been WAY too long since I wrote on this page. We just returned from three fabulous weeks in Cabo and did some exploring this trip worthy of reporting. On the referral from a "foody" friend, we discovered Tre Galline in Todos Santos. An excellent and authentic Italian restaurant that hit all the nails on the head, from the appetizers to the main course to the imported Italian wine, and the very reasonable overall bill. Definitely worth the trip and easily one of the better restaurants in the region.
In San Jose cabo, we were treated to Flora Farms, a newly (2010) created/converted restaurant that sits on an organic farm that's been around for some time. They raise all the food they serve including their own pigs and beef. What a venue. Peaceful, serene, remote, green, very earthy. You'll need direction to get here, as it's down a mile or two of dirt roads.
Also in San Jose, we visited the newly opened Wirikuta Botanical Desert Garden. What a spread. Roughly five acres or so of thousands upon thousands of cactus, beautifully and artfully arranged for your viewing pleasure. Really neat.
And back in Cabo San Lucas, we met a new activities partner, Captain Bob, of DaySailCabo.com We rode on his 52' sail boat in utter comfort, enjoying appetizers of fresh fruit, fresh veggies, very fresh and tasty ceviche, and sandwiches, all while under sail on the open seas with an unlimited bar and unparalleled view of the ocean and visiting whales. While under sail, the whales are more likely to surface and play near the boat as they are very curious and definitely not afraid. About $100 per head and worth every penny.
Well, all the hoopla and the hype and the preparation and set up and the take down are done. Mission accomplished. Mexico, and Los Cabos, received a great deal of positive international press from having all the major world leaders and their entourages in town, some for weeks and months in advance. When it was all said and done, virtually all 13,000 hotel rooms were booked by attendees of the conference. Even our house was booked for two weeks by an advertising company from Mexico City. Good.
Unfortunately the water has recently cooled and turned a cloudy green, virtually shutting down the fish bite. Thankfully, it's not expected to last.
Recently reported in the Gringo Gazette, Mexico now boasts a very respectable growth rate of 3.9%, nearly double the 2.2% the US touts. Toursim remains a large positive factor in the equation.
The police presence on the streets should start to decrease now that the conference has passed. Leading up to the conference many expatriots reported being pulled over in the cars (US plates). If you are ever pulled over, insist that the officer give you a "teekit." Take a picture of him with your cell phone if he refuses.
Thank GOD, Mexicana coming back!!
Reported recently in this edition of the Gringo Gazette, we hear that my favorite airline (Mexicana--free hot meal, excellent service, free drinks on route, etc.) is almost ready to emerge from bankruptcy. After two long years, I say thank GOD, and it's about time. I hope we get our direct flight back...please please please.
In fishing news out of Cabo San Lucas, striped marlin are being spotted as close as two miles off-shore. As the water temperatures increase, we should start to see better action all the way around, including more and larger tuna.
The big news in town this month of June is the G20 summit, which is huge for our region as the world's leaders and their entourages will literally fill the city; the exposure internationally is going to be great. I hope that all goes off without a hitch, and all have a really good time.
